APPENDIX A Report of GA Commissioners TO: North Central Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in session with the Good Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Trilla, Illinois, October 8-9, 2010.
We are thankful for the opportunity to have represented North Central Presbytery at the 180th General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dickson, Tennessee the week of June 13 to 17. Originally it was thought the activities were to be at the Montgomery Bell State Park. However, with the exception of Tuesday all events were scheduled at the Dickson Middle School. North Central Commissioners served on the following committees, Jerry Pataki, Theology & Social Concern; Steven Hughes, Higher Education, Rev. Dr. David West, Children’s Home & Historical Foundation, J. B. Gates, Stewardship & Elected Officers. We hereby submit this joint report.
The Assembly started on Sunday June 13 with an orientation session beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Dickson C.P. Church. Joint Sunday evening worship service was held at the Dickson Middle School at 6:00 p.m., between the CPCA and the CPC and was attended by several hundred people. Rev. Stan Wood spoke on the Assembly theme of, "What Do These Stones Mean?" Rev. Wood stressed we must honor our past and look forward to our future. After the evening worship service a reception honoring Women in Ministry was held.
Monday started at 8:30 a.m. with committees starting to work through the many requests made by Agencies, Boards, and Presbyteries. At 2:00 we had the Opening worship/Business session. The Reverend Boyce Wallace was elected moderator and Rev. Harry Chapman as vice moderator. The Reverend Michael Sharpe was elected to serve the two-year unexpired term of the Dr. Robert Rush as Stated Clerk of the General Assembly. Dr. Rush has served the General Assembly for 31 years as Engrossing Clerk and as Stated Clerk. Several presentations were made to Dr. Rush for his service to General Assembly. Dr Rush also read a joint resolution from the legislature of Tennessee honoring the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination on its Bicentennial Celebration. North Central Presbytery was recognized for its contribution of $25,000.00 to the Cali Retirement Home, Hogar Samaria. The plaque has been delivered to the Stated Clerk for display at presbytery. The first roll call showed 45 ministers, 43 elders, and 25 youth delegates; followed by a Reception honoring the Moderator, Vice Moderator, the immediate past Moderator, President and President elect of the Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry Convention.
Tuesday, June 15 Montgomery Bell State Park 10:00a.m. joint Worship/Communion service with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America at the Birthplace Shrine. Reverend Dr. Jay Earheart-Brown brought the morning message entitled “The Stones Will Cry Out”. This service was attended by several hundred persons. We celebrated the Lord’s Supper under the direction of Rev. Dr. Theodis Acklin and Rev. C. Williams Jones, Sr. After a box lunch, the afternoon consisted of brief devotionals in the chapel, singing groups, crafts and games of the 1820’s. At 3:00 p.m. the Rev. Geoff Knight dedicated the monument at the park. The Shrine area consists of a Chapel, reproduction of McAdow home site and the monument. This was followed at 7:00 p.m. with committee work sessions.
Wednesday, 8:30a.m. Committees again met to finish their work. At 7:30 p.m. “Light Along the Cumberland” was presented by Bethel University Renaissance group, and an offering was received for Bethel. This was a first class presentation and was certainly a highlight of the week along with Tuesday’s morning service.
Thursday 8:30 a.m. We started the day with devotions lead by the youth delegates. The morning devotional leader was called home due to illness and the youth were asked to handle all the devotional service. They did a wonderful job on short notice. We do have some good leaders growing in the youth of the Church. We as adults need to give them guidance and opportunities to develop. This was followed with the conclusion of business. The most floor discussion concerned a resolution to General Assembly to allow remote technology use. This was offered from the floor by Rev. Sherrlyn Frost of Grace Presbytery. Closing worship service under the leadership of Rev. Chris Warren was observed and business of the 180th General Assembly was closed before the evening meal. The following report is a synopsis of committee work of your Commissioners.
Report on the Committee on Theology and Social Concerns -- Jerry Pataki
The Committee had Rev. Stanley Mosley, representative of the Unified Committee on Theology and Social Concerns Committee, present. The stated clerk was requested to write a letter of appreciation to Rev. Lanny Johnson and his family for his time serving the committee. The paper, “Let’s Not Wait for the Next Catastrophe” by Debby Marston is to be circulated at Presbyteries and by all commissioners to be shared with all churches. All churches are to minister to orphans and are encouraged to strengthen families and support the Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home. The Committee believes that to witness our faith and oppose violence in the world we need to commit to following the Prince of Peace by examining our thoughts, words and deeds ensuring they conform to scripture and show love to both our enemies and to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The youth advisory delegates expressed their concerns of violence at school and will try to get along with others.
Report on the Committee of Higher Education -- Steven Hughes The Committee celebrated with Bethel University in its status change to University and its growth. There are now over 3000 students enrolled and the need for new buildings has spurred the completion of a new science building debt-free and a new dormitory now under construction. With growth of 20% for the past few years, there have been new programs added to the curriculum including a Master of Physician Assistant Studies, one of 125 in the nation, and the Master of Business Administration, the largest MBA in Tennessee. The Renaissance program in Arts gives Bethel nationwide exposure. Dr. Earheart-Brown reported that even with a loss of $500,000 in the budget causing loss of teaching and administrative positions, enrollment is strong with over 350 students from 25 denominations making Memphis Theological Seminary an ecumenical school of higher education. Because of the economy, there is an increased need for fund raising. New programs are youth Ministry training, drug and alcohol addiction counseling, and a Korean Dr. of Ministry program under development. General Assembly was requested to express gratitude to Mr. Chester Dickson, Dr. Rebecca Salisbury, Mr. Mark Davis and Mr. William Nelms and Ms. Amy Howe for service to the Seminary and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church; to Dr. Barbara A. Holmes for five years of service to the Seminary as Vice-President of Academic Affairs and Dean; and to Dr. Thomas D. Campbell for the faithful service he has given to preparation of ministers through the Program of Alternate Studies. The Higher Education Youth Committee gave their report. The Seminary holds dual accreditation by the Association of Theological Schools in the U.S. and Canada (ATS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SCACS). Each church is encouraged to participate in Seminary Sunday and to support Bethel University.
Children’s Home & Historical Foundation -- Rev. Dr. David West The committee was pleased with the new services for the parents of the children at the home. We also asked that each congregation receive an offering on Children’s Home Sunday, May 15, 2011. Each congregation was also encouraged to set aside one Sunday a month to pray for the home and its mission. The Committee is pleased with the efficient manner in which the administration handles the Foundation.
Stewardship & Elected Officers -- J. B. Gates, Rev. We had reports referred to us from the Moderator, Stated Clerk, Board of Stewardship, Foundation, and Benefits, OUO and General Assembly Agencies. The Committee adopted the message “Go and Make Disciples”. The Board gave information on the Endowment, Investment Loan Program and Retirement Program funds. The insurance carrier was changed to Blue Cross-Blue Shield. Ministerial Aid requirements were addressed. Mr. Gardner gave the 2011 OUO information noting it is expecting to receive $2,600,000. Rev. Robert Rush gave information on the adoption of a resolution by the State of Tennessee recognizing the 200th birthday of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and denomination’s debt, prompting the Committee to make a recommendation the .5% of OUO be made to the Contingency Fund beginning in 2012. The Committee commended Dr. Rush for his many years of service to the Office of General Assembly.
Again we your commissioners to this General Assembly thank you for the opportunity to have been of service to North Central Presbytery and for the pleasure of attending the festivities of General Assembly.
